My Acoustic Strings

Back in the day my mother would blast Lauryn's cassette tape "The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill."  Yes, cassette tape. I remember listening to her voice and saying " wow", she is amazing. And then once we got cable, I was like "wow" she is beautiful. Growing up, her music followed me and became apart of my life. It's hard to explain how I feel about another artist having being an artist myself. Her words are like how I would describe my brush strokes, they become an extension of me.  I remember the first time I cried listening to "The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill."  I was pregnant with my first child Raine, and I was sitting on the bus riding to work. "Zion" was on repeat while listening to my ipod. I burst into tears. It felt like hearing her words for the first time in my life. The words resonated in my ears and out came tears of sorrow, joy, and pain.  I thought to myself, could there be anything more beautiful than the loving embrace of mother and child? I knew then that I had to paint Lauryn the way she made me feel inside. And I did.
I will be posting the scan on my website shortly guys, so look for that soon. Until now enjoy the image and go cop you a Lauryn Hill album!!!

  1. Wow Gloria, this painting is beautiful... I absolutely love the thin, drippy textures in the background, and the super-swirly tops of the bird-heads.

If there is any one thing that I would do to enhance this piece, it would be in Lauryn's face itself. It looks frozen, and is missing the subtle differences between a posed face, and a natural one. She looks like she could be either wailing in pain, or singing in a sort of relaxed mysticism, and unless that duality is what the aim is... it might do well to try and edit the caricature slightly to be slightly more life-like.

Overall though, this really is a wonderful piece. I love all the elements, and how you combined them so wonderfully. From how you approached making Lauryn her own guitar, to how you blended it in with the rose, and to how you managed to make a beautiful and vibrant painting with just two or three colors really dominating your pallet. It's lovely, and I'm so excited to be seeing your work again!!!

  2. I was just searching for this information for a while. After 6 hours of continuous Googleing, finally I got it in your site. I wonder what is the lack of Google strategy that do not rank this type of informative web sites in top of the list. Normally the top web sites are full of garbage.
